    The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation shall carry on supporting Ukraine and strengthening its own strategic deterrence potential. It shall also continue its operational engagement in the Western Balkans and the NATO Mission in Iraq and shall flexibly adapt its operation to the ever-changing security environment. All this was agreed by the NATO Defence Ministers during their two-day meeting in Brussels, which unexpectedly also welcomed the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

    Today, the Government approved the new Defence Strategy of the Czech Republic. The reason for its creation is primarily a fundamental deterioration of the security environment, to which the Czech Republic and its armed forces must respond. The document describes what threats we face and what needs to be done to make our defences strong and reliable. Its main priorities include a whole-of-society approach to defence, adequate funding for the armed forces and an active membership in NATO.

    Dozens of countries which militarily support Ukraine, have once again met at the Ramstein airbase. Led by U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, the meeting’s agenda included current information from the battlefield and the future development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and its capabilities. The Czech Republic was represented by Deputy Minister of Defence Daniel Blažkovec, who signed the so-called Letter of Intent with Defence Ministers of Denmark and the Netherlands. This agreement, which provides for further supplies of mostly Czech weaponry to Ukraine with financial support of Denmark and the Netherlands, represents a great opportunity for Czech industries.

    Called AMSE Lite 2023, this year’s edition of the multinational air-land exercise Ample Strike has not been so extensive in terms of the number of trainees, but it does not diminish its importance. The 10th iteration has again verified interoperability of the air power, Joint Terminal Attack Controllers and land forces. The participation comprises five dozen Czech service members and three dozen from the armed forces of three other NATO nations – Germany, Poland and the United States.

    The city of Toledo, Spain, was the venue to an informal meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council – Defence organised by the Spanish Presidency. The agenda included further support to Ukraine, global impact of the Russian aggression and the security situation in Africa and in the Western Balkans.
