Czech Armed Forces in command of EU Training Mission Mali for the second time

On June 21, 2022, for the second time in its history, the Czech Armed Forces took over the command of European forces in Mali. Czechs were in the lead of the operation once before, in 2020. The EUTM Mali Force Commander is now Brigadier General Radek Hasala, who took over from Brigadier General Christian Riener of Austria. In the next six months, Czech Armed Forces service personnel will be in command of over 700 European service members from 25 countries.

A jump of military paratroopers, commemoration function, remembrance ceremony with solemn wreath laying and all-day programme at Charles Square in Prague; all these events commemorated the heroism of people in World War II Operation Anthropoid. Seven Czechoslovak paratroopers, including those who carried out the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, succumbed to the more numerous Nazis in the Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius exactly 80 years ago. Their courage was remembered by distinguished guests including the Czech Minister of Defence Jana Černochová and the Slovak Minister of Defence Jaroslav Naď, who used the occasion to ask the Czech Republic for assistance with air defence of his country.

On Tuesday May 17th, 2022, Brussels was a venue to the meeting of EU Defence Ministers. The discussions entertained the implementation of the Strategic Compass, EU missions and operations with emphasis on the EU Training Mission in Mali and last but not least, the Russian military aggression in Ukraine. Minister Černochová introduced the priorities of the upcoming Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU. A European Defence Agency (EDA) Steering Committee session, where the Ministers were briefed on the analysis of EU defence investment gaps, took place as part of the Ministerial.

Today, Deputy Minister of Defence for Industrial Cooperation Tomáš Kopečný officially launched the second season of the “We know what we have“ video series. While the pilot season introduced the Czech defence industrial capacities, the second season offers a close-up on the role the Czech research institutes and businesses play in the field of emerging defence and security technologies.
