    The planned MASCAL exercise of the 15th Czech Surgical Team at the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul developed into a real life rescue event last week. The training exercise was interrupted when a helicopter crashed near the airport and the surgical team had to administer medical aid to the injured soldiers, personnel and civilians on the ground.

    "The Czech Republic was the first country to offer concrete assistance," the Hungarian Minister of Defence Istvan Simicsko told his Czech counterpart, Martin Stropnicky, at talks in Brussels on 8th October. "Only a real friend will help when trouble looms. The Czech Republic quickly understood our problems and the threat to our values," added Minister Simicsko.

    On 15th October, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Andrej Babis, visited a military garrison in Praslavice in the Olomouc region. The visit was at the invitation of the Chief of the General Staff, Lieutenant General Josef Becvar, and coincided with recent negotiations regarding an increase in the military budget over the next few years.
